How To Organize Your Self Storage Units

Lois King

Self-storage units have proved to be a great temporary and long-term storage solution. Today, people are open to renting storage units during life transitions or when they run out of storage space. Sadly, not many people take the time to organize their self-storage units. As such, people often have a hard time when trying to locate items in their units.

Here are a couple of tips that could help keep your storage unit in order.

Clean the Unit Before Moving In

If you move into a storage unit that hasn't been swept, you may not feel as motivated to arrange your belongings carefully. You'll just stash away your things and forget about them. Therefore, it's important to set the right mood by sweeping the place before moving in. As long as the unit is clean, you'll have some motivation to keep things in order.

Build Custom Shelves

It's almost impossible to keep your storage unit organized if it lacks shelves. Since storage units don't always provide shelves, you may have to design and build some custom shelves. Luckily, most commercial storage facilities allow clients to build freestanding shelving units to help them organize their stuff.

Just get the materials you need from the home improvement store and begin working on your shelves. Remember to build shelves that can accommodate both small and large boxes.

Keep Everything Labelled

If you pack your stuff in different boxes or tubs, you should label them for easier identification. For instance, if you place utensils in one box, stick a label on the box to indicate that it contains utensils. Do that for all the boxes you have in the storage unit.

When labeling stuff, avoid using dry-erase markers as they will wipe off easily. Instead, use permanent markers, as they don't erase easily. The other strategy is to attach stick-on labels on the shelves. You can move the labels whenever you move the boxes.

Arrange Your Items by Necessity

If you are planning to keep a lot of stuff in a storage unit, you should arrange them in the order of necessity. Place the items you don't need most in the furthest wall or corner. On the other hand, you should put the things you need to access often near the exit. This way, you can always grab them without having to move everything else in the unit.

In addition to these four strategies, make sure you:

  • Disassemble furniture
  • Create a list of all items
  • Store your boxes vertically
  • Leave a walkway
